Lesson plans

11 Practical Skills Lesson Plans

Each lesson plan is structured for a 90-minute block and includes objectives, teaching guidance, AICE-style practice, differentiation, assessment and linked resources.

For teachers working with 40–45-minute periods, I recommend dividing each lesson into two parts:

  • Day 1: Deliver the content.
  • Day 2: Use the bell ringer and complete the activities.

Lesson 1

Experimental design

Students will learn how to identify variables, select suitable values and design a controlled marine science investigation…

Lesson 2

Experimental design practical

Students will understand the effect of substrate on water permeability…

Lesson 3

Presentation of data and observations

Students will learn how to present data as tables, drawings, tables and graphs…

Lesson 4

Evaluation of procedures and data

Students will learn how to identify the limitations and sources of error…

Lesson 5

Assessment

Students will show mastery of the content and continue hands-on activity…

Lesson 6

Populations and sampling techniques

Students will understand mark-release-recapture method and limitations…

Lesson 7

Populations and sampling techniques

Students will explain how Simpson’s index of diversity is used to calculate marine….

Lesson 8

Populations and sampling techniques

Students will Interpret the results of Spearman’s rank of correlation…

Lesson 9

Experimental design

Students will learn how to identify variables, select suitable values and design a controlled marine science investigation…

Lesson 10

Experimental design practical

Students will understand the impact of ocean acidification through hands-on experimentation…

Lesson 11

Presentation of data and observations

Students will learn how to present data as tables, drawings, tables and graphs…
