This activity covers the concepts of Unit#5 Managing resources, section 1 Food security for AICE Environmental Management AS course.

Students compare the cost of their meals (one day) and the amount of calories to what it could be purchased and how many calories one individual can receive when having a budget of $5, $2.14, and $1 per day. This activity helps students understand the difference between starvation and malnutrition and also compare the percent of income people from countries of different income level spend on a plate of basic food.

This activity was much enjoyed by my students and got that “wow” moment that we educators are looking for. I hope your students will also enjoy the activity and it will start conversations around the topic of food security/ food insecurity.
