Effective Teaching Strategies for AICE Environmental Management: Mastering Waste Disposal and Its Impacts

As an AICE Environmental Management teacher, helping your students excel in their exams is a top priority. One of the critical areas in the curriculum is understanding the methods of waste disposal and treatment, as well as the environmental impacts of these methods. In this post, we’ll explore effective teaching strategies to improve student comprehension and retention, leading to higher passing rates on the AICE Environmental Management Exam.

Instruction

  • Lecture/Notes
    • Ask students the following question: “What happens to our trash after we throw it away?” This leads to a class discussion of about 10 minutes. Anticipated misconception: Students may believe that all waste is simply thrown in a landfill without considering other options.
    • In order to capture the students’ interest, show them images or videos of different methods of waste disposal and treatment. Here is one that I like:

  • Use interactive lectures paired with student-guided notes. This method ensures students actively engage with the material rather than passively listening. Present the various methods of waste disposal and treatment, such as landfilling, incineration, recycling, composting, and advanced technologies like pyrolysis and anaerobic digestion.
  • After discussing each method, have students fill in guided notes that highlight key points, advantages, and disadvantages of each method. This promotes active learning and reinforces key concepts.
  • Individual activity
    • Practice Questions 1-7 page 229-232 (Coursebook)

Here’s how it works:

  • Solve a Pre-Made Maze: Students start by solving a challenging, pre-made maze puzzle to warm up their critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Challenge: Create Their Own Maze: Using the included blank maze template, students will unleash their creativity to design their own unique puzzles.
  • Swap and Solve: Students exchange their custom-designed mazes with a partner or another classmate, racing to see who can solve the other’s puzzle first!
  • Exit ticket
    • If you opt to have students complete their notes using the Student Guided Notes format during your lecture, then use the bellringer as the exit ticket activity in class.
    • If you opt to have students complete their notes using the Student Guided Notes format at home (homework), then use the following exit ticket activity:
      • Students take turns and share the answers for questions 1-7.

Homework

  • The sole homework task assigned to my students revolves around meticulously transcribing notes in the Student Guided Notes format. They meticulously replicate content by hand from the Lecture/Notes (PPT – slides 36-40) presentation.
  • This approach ensures that during class time, while I continue to deliver lectures and expound on topics, students have their notes already compiled. Consequently, they can actively engage, ask questions, and delve deeper into understanding rather than merely being preoccupied with note-taking. This strategy efficiently liberates valuable class time, allowing for engaging activities and practice Cambridge style questions.
