Curriculum Pacing Guide

1 Day = 90 minutes class.

Day 1. Lesson

  • 1.1 Particle theory and bonding

Objectives

  • explain the changes of state in water
  • describe the structure of the atom
  • describe the covalent bonding in a water molecule
  • describe ionic and hydrogen bonds
  • explain how hydrogen bonding in water affects the properties of water

Day 2. Lesson

  • 1.2 Solubility in water

Objectives

  • explain the terms solute, solvent, solution and solubility
  • describe how soluble salts, such as sodium chloride, dissolve in water
  • explain the effect of water temperature on the solubility of salts
  • explain the effect of surface run-off, precipitation and evaporation on the salinity of sea water

Instructional Materials

Day 3. Lesson

  • 1.2 Solubility in water

Objectives

  • describe the pH scale and methods of measurement
  • describe the effect of water temperature, water pressure (depth), atmospheric pressure and salinity on the solubility of gases in water and the implications this has for marine organisms

Instructional Materials

Day 4. Lesson

  • 1.1 Particle theory and bonding
  • 1.2 Solubility in water

Objectives

  • Understand the format and structure of AICE style questions.
  • Practice answering AICE style questions to reinforce understanding of key concepts.
  • Receive immediate feedback to improve exam readiness.

Day 5. Lesson

  • 1.3 Density and pressure

Objectives

  • explain how water temperature, water pressure and salinity affect the density of sea water
  • describe how temperature and salinity gradients form in water columns to produce ocean layers

Instructional Materials

Day 6. Lesson
