Enhancing Student Success: The Importance of Using AICE Style Questions for Review in Marine Science

As AICE Marine Science teachers, one of our primary goals is to ensure that our students are well-prepared for their exams. A crucial part of this preparation involves consistent and targeted review of key concepts using AICE style questions. Crafting these questions ourselves, tailored specifically to our students’ needs, can significantly enhance their understanding and performance.

Materials

Vocabulary

Describe: state the points of a topic / give characteristics and main features
Explain: set out purposes or reasons / make the relationships between things evident / provide why and/or how and support with relevant evidence
State: express in clear terms
Predict: suggest what may happen based on available information
Suggest: apply knowledge and understanding to situations where there are a range of valid responses in order to make proposals
Define: give precise meaning
Outline: set out main points
Calculate: work out from given facts, figures or information

Review/ Practice Questions Cambridge style – Review & Exam Prep Handout + Answer

Use these practice questions after completing the chapter notes or as part of your unit review. Students can complete the questions independently, in pairs, or as guided practice during class.

After students complete the questions, review the included answer key together. Discuss not only the correct answers but also what makes a high-quality AICE response, emphasizing scientific vocabulary, command words, calculations, and clear explanations.

Puzzle review game

Print the puzzle cards on cardstock and laminate them for repeated classroom use. Shuffle the cards before each class and distribute them to student pairs or small groups.

Students work together to arrange the puzzle by matching each question or statement with its correct answer. Every card must connect correctly on all four sides, encouraging students to discuss concepts, justify their thinking, and check one another’s reasoning before completing the puzzle.

Once all groups have finished, students compare their completed puzzles with the included answer key to identify and correct any mistakes. This provides an excellent opportunity for class discussion and immediate formative assessment.

Unlike traditional worksheets, this puzzle requires students to think critically about every match they make. As they connect questions, vocabulary, diagrams, calculations, and definitions, students naturally review key concepts, explain their reasoning, and strengthen long-term retention.
