Lesson Outline

Hook

  • Imagine you’re standing at the edge of a river, watching the clear water flow steadily by. Suddenly, you notice a sign warning about potential water shortages in the area. How would you ensure that this precious resource remains available for future generations? This real-world scenario can capture your students’ attention and set the stage for a comprehensive lesson on managing water security.

Instruction

  • Lecture/Notes Lecture/Notes (PPT – slides 21-28)
    • Introduce the key points of the lesson using the PowerPoint presentation – Chapter#6 Managing water supplies – slides 21-28.
    • Highlight how different methods of saving/ using less water work to manage water security. Methods such as improving irrigation techniques (drip irrigation), planting crops that don’t use too much water, irrigating at night work to reduce water consumption in agriculture.
    • Describe how freshwater is produced using desalination of sea-water through methods such as distillation and reverse osmosis.
    • While lecturing students take notes using the Student Guided Notes handout.
  • Review/Check for understanding Small group activity Task Cards Managing Water Supplies
    • Use this activity to help students review the topics covered by this unit/chapter. The activity can be found HERE.
    • 50 task cards to engage your students individually and collaboratively, reinforcing key concepts in an interactive manner. These cards are not just pieces of paper; they are gateways to an immersive learning experience.
    • Step 1: Preparation
      • Print the set of 50 task cards without answers for individual review sessions.
      • Print a second set of the same task cards, this time with answers.
      • Organize the cards in sets for easy distribution.
    • Step 2: Group Review
      • Pair up your students, preferably pairing a low achiever with a high achiever.
      • Provide each pair with a set of task cards with answers and without answers.
      • Instruct the low achiever to take charge with the answer cards, challenging the high achiever with insightful quizzes.
      • After a round, switch roles to ensure a dynamic learning experience for both students. This encourages collaboration and a deeper understanding of the material.
    • Step 3: Evaluation and Feedback
      • Collect feedback from students about their experience with the task cards.
      • Assess their understanding of the chapter through informal discussions, questions, and observations during the activity.
      • Use the feedback to tailor future review sessions and activities based on the needs and preferences of your students.
  • Exit ticket
    • If you opt to have students complete their notes using the Student Guided Notes format during your lecture, then use the bellringer as the exit ticket activity in class.
    • If you opt to have students complete their notes using the Student Guided Notes format at home (homework), then use the following exit ticket activity:
      • 6.3 Questions 1-5 – page 262 (Coursebook)

By incorporating real-world case studies, interactive simulations, structured debates, and Cambridge-style questions into your teaching strategy, you can create a dynamic and effective learning environment. These methods not only help students understand the complexities of managing water security but also prepare them thoroughly for their AICE Environmental Management exams. With dedication and the right approach, you can significantly enhance your students’ success rates and foster a deeper appreciation for environmental management.
