Mastering the AICE Marine Science AS Exam: The Importance of Command Words

When a question uses the command word “describe”, students must state the point of a topic. They should give the characteristics and main features. I teach my students to use one bullet point with a short, but concise statement for each mark. For a question like the one above, my students use four bullet points.
For questions using the command word “explain”, students have to provide evidence, why and how something happens. My students use one bullet point with a more detailed explanation, for each two marks. For the example above, two bullet points will suffice the four marks question.
If students have to answer questions containing “state” as command word, they must express in clear terms what the question asks.
