Effective Strategies for Teaching AICE Environmental Management: Understanding Terrestrial Biomes
Teaching AICE Environmental Management can be a rewarding yet challenging experience, especially when aiming for higher exam passing rates. One critical area of focus is understanding the world’s major terrestrial biomes, including their climate, soil type, and vegetation. In this blog post, we’ll explore effective strategies to improve your teaching methods and help your students excel in this topic.
Objectives
- 4.1 Ecosystems
- describe the world’s major terrestrial biomes in terms of their climate, soil type and vegetation
Vocabulary
- Diurnal temperature range– A variation between high and low air temperatures that occur during the same day (e.g. changes between night and daytime temperatures).
- Convectional Rainfall– Rainfall that occurs when the energy of the sun heats up Earth’s surface and causes water to evaporate and become water vapor. This then condenses to form clouds at higher altitudes.
Bellringer
- Bell ringer#1
- Alternative: What are biomes?
Lesson Outline
- Begin your lesson with Bell ringer#1
- Lecture/Notes – Lecture (Chapter 4 PPT – slides 1-9)
- Describe the different types of biomes highlighting the climate, type of soil, vegetation and organisms adaptations.
This video about terrestrial biomes enhances the lesson by providing students with a more vivid and comprehensive understanding of the distinctions and similarities among various biome types. This great video is made by Dynamic Earth Learning and more of their cool resources can be found @ https://dynamicearthlearning.com/. Go check it out!

- Use Guided Notes – This year, I’m using Version B Guided Notes with my students, as I’ve noticed they benefit from having more structured support during class.
- It features fill-in-the-blank prompts for key vocabulary and concepts, making notetaking faster and more accessible, especially for English language learners or those with processing difficulties.

- Individual activity
- Create an interactive biome mapping activity to help students visualize the distribution of various biomes around the world. Provide a blank world map and have students color-code and label the major biomes: tropical rainforests, temperate forests, deserts, grasslands, tundra, and boreal forests. Encourage them to include key information about the climate, soil type, and vegetation of each biome. This hands-on activity reinforces geographical knowledge and biome characteristics.
- Exit ticket
- If you opt to have students complete their notes using the Student Guided Notes format during your lecture, then use the bellringer as the exit ticket activity in class.
- If you opt to have students complete their notes using the Student Guided Notes format at home (homework), then use the following exit ticket activity:
- 1. What are the main factors that distinguish deserts from other biomes?
- 2. Explain how the soil type in forests differs from that in deserts.
- 3. Why do grasslands support a different type of vegetation compared to forests?
- 4. How does the climate in tundra impact the growth of plants?
Improving your teaching methods for AICE Environmental Management can significantly enhance your students’ understanding and exam performance. By using interactive activities, group work, technology, real-world examples, and regular practice with exam-style questions, you can create an engaging and effective learning environment. Focusing on the world’s major terrestrial biomes and their unique characteristics will equip your students with the knowledge and skills needed to excel in their exams.
Homework – high level/flipped classroom
- Version A – For High-Level Students:
Ideal for independent or advanced learners, this version requires students to copy all notes by hand as homework before class. This flipped-learning approach helps students come to class prepared, freeing up time for application activities, discussions, and AICE-style practice questions. - For this assignment have students fill in the blanks using the PPT Presentation.Â
These notes serve as a comprehensive and organized reference, ensuring that students capture key concepts, important details, and key takeaways from the presentation with clarity and ease. They offer a roadmap to enhanced comprehension and retention, making the learning experience both efficient and effective.
