Here, we will outline some strategies to effectively teach this topic and improve your students’ exam success.

Hook
- Display an image of a diverse group of people enjoying a meal together and ask students to discuss the importance of food in their lives.
- Have students share their thoughts in pairs or small groups, and then select a few groups to share their ideas with the whole class.

- Begin your lesson by clearly defining food security. According to the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), food security exists when all people, at all times, have physical, social, and economic access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food that meets their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life. Break down this definition into digestible parts and relate it to everyday experiences to make it more relatable.
- Provide a definition of food security and food insecurity, highlighting the concept of access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food for an active and healthy life.
- Explain the causes of food insecurity, such as population growth, poverty, environmental factors (like drought or natural disasters), land degradation, agricultural pests and diseases, climate change, diverting crops for biofuels.
- Address the common misconception that food insecurity only occurs in developing countries, emphasizing that it can also exist in developed nations.

- This approach ensures that during class time, while I continue to deliver lectures and expound on topics, students have their notes already compiled. Consequently, they can actively engage, ask questions, and delve deeper into understanding rather than merely being preoccupied with note-taking. This strategy efficiently liberates valuable class time, allowing for engaging activities and practice Cambridge style questions.
